The John Muir School PTA promotes the market -- via press releases to all the local newspapers, a listing in their Calendar sections including the Santa Monica Mirror; neighborhood sign and banner postings, and briefs with links placed on websites that list art, antique, collectable, craft and flea market events. The fleamarket is a community event run by volunteer parents of children that attend John Muir School and Olympic High School. It began as a flea market in the early 1990s and this June moves to a new location in the heart of Ocean Park: the parking lot of John Muir Elementary School at Ocean Park Boulevard and 5th Street. It is widely supported by the community that appreciates the importance of a high quality neighborhood school.
